Re:cognise #2 – Exploring inspirational individuals

Emberson Marketing is powered by brilliant people. When you are a remote-first business, your team are your most valuable commodity. We invest in their skills, talents and individuality – and in return we get to spend our working weeks watching them thrive.

Our new Re:cognise Series explores the inspirational individuals we’re lucky to work with every single day – and the people that inspire them.

Going the extra mile: meet Maria’s role model

As our Creative Services and Operations Manager, Maria is the glue that holds us all together. The person, behind the people that makes things happen. So, let’s get to know her a little better.

Hi Maria. What qualities do you look for in a positive role model?

“Whether in the working environment or in life, for me, a role model is someone I look up to and respect.

Not just for what is seen as the obvious reasons – strong, outspoken and successful. They are also not afraid to go against the majority and say or do what they think is right.

“They are strong leaders – maybe of others, maybe just to know what they want and can achieve themselves. Strong, but not afraid to listen to others, consider their point of view and say sorry when they need to. Positive role models are people, not machines. They are not afraid to show their humanity but are determined enough to go after their goals.”

How do you try to be a role model to others?

I have seen a lot of changes in myself and what I can achieve over the years and this is partly because of some of the traits I go on to list in my role models – determined, but patient, honest, loyal, fair but also stubborn and strong. It is always good to see traits you  respect in others and you are never too old to learn from what you have seen. I hope I have been a good role model to those who have worked for me, and with me over the years.

“In my own life, I strive to be a good and loyal friend, to be there when needed. I am not afraid to speak up for others and myself. Sometimes this can mean disagreements with friends, because let’s be honest, friends don’t always agree with each other. But the differences and honesty are all part of being good friends.”

Who would you say is your role model and why?

“My most recent role model is my ultra-running buddy, Jacqui. I met Jacqui on an organised five mile run in January 2022. Since then, Jacqui and I have become inseparable friends with a shared love of  running in the middle of nowhere! We regularly go out for (very) long off-road runs. We get lost, attacked by stinging nettles and the occasionally hornets. We call them our adventure runs.

We have seen sunsets while out running, sun rises and all the wonders of nature. My greatest running achievement is running The South Downs 100 miler which we completed in 2023 for fun(!) and to raise money for Cancer Research. Something I would not have been able to do without Jacqui’s determination, encouragement and belief in me.

Jacqui is one tough cookie, who enjoys life, is always smiling and is a true friend - I have  been blessed to meet her. She has taught me that anything we want to do… “Yes, we can!”. Here’s to many, many more miles, many more proseccos and many more smiles.”
