Absorbing worldly wisdom: meet Natalie’s role model
Chances are, you may have already met EM’s Development Director, Natalie. Now, let’s get to know her a little better.
Hi Natalie. What qualities do you look for in a positive role model?
“I greatly admire many people Michelle Obama, Audrey Hepburn, Jacinda Ardern, my classics lecturer at university. Then there are colleagues I have worked with during my career, those I see in passing on social media who follow their dreams or those who stand up for their beliefs and fight for others. Add to the list sports people and those in the creative industries who are relentless in their pursuit of their passion – you get the picture.
“What do all of these people have in common? Their focus. They set their goals and strive to achieve them. I celebrate this, but also value courage, consistency, hard work and confidence, combined with compassion, collaboration, honesty and integrity.”
How do you try to be a role model to others?
“I’m not consciously trying to be a role model. I simply endeavour to take each day and every situation as it comes. I try to remember to balance my experience and ambition with authenticity and empathy. I might not always get it right, but I attempt to be optimistic - aiming to learn from every situation and use that to develop myself, and hopefully have a positive impact on those around me.”
Who would you say is your role model and why?
“My family is full of strong women who have taught me many things that I am now sharing with my girls.
“Frances Mary was one of them. Nana was brought up in the North-East coastal village of Cullercoats.
A determined young woman, Frances moved to London at 18 to join the Salvation Army’s officer training programme where she continued embrace life changing experiences. In 1935 Frances found herself on a ship bound for Brasil, where she stayed for 15 years as a missionary, wife and mother.
“The time Frances spent in Brasil was a source of fascination to me. A wonderful storyteller, she told of challenges and hardship, but also of wonderful people, incredible positivity and determination to succeed – a world filled with colour.
“Throughout her life she was someone loved by all, no one was ever a stranger just a new friend. She always had time to talk, bake, listen, sew, support, encourage but never judge. Frances never gave up, there was always a way forward – a pioneer ahead of her time.
“Her guidance and the example she set me is something I have always tried to remember. That combination of determination and compassion.
“I honestly believe the only thing she ever failed to do was teach me to knit!”
